So you’ve moved out on your own – either you’re out of your parents’ house for the first time or you’re finally living on your own without roommates. Congratulations! It’s liberating to be able to do whatever you want whenever you want, as well as decorating your apartment however you want. There are a few rules, however, to perfecting your new place. Here are three basic things no bachelor pad should be without.
A Good Bed
Let’s bring your mind up out of the gutter, first of all, because the main reason to need a good bed and a decent mattress is purely health-related. We spend about a third of our lives in bed, asleep, so that time needs to be spent getting good-quality shut-eye. Make sure your mattress is supportive enough if you’ve got back problems and soft enough that you don’t wake up with hip and shoulder pain.
And yes…having a great bed (hopefully on a proper frame instead of a mattress on the floor) does help make a better impression in the romance department. Resume having your mind in the gutter!
A Coffee Table
An empty space in front of the couch looks lonely and sad. Fill it with a coffee table and you’ll have a multi-purpose piece of furniture that can do almost anything. True to its name, it serves as a place to set your coffee in the morning. It also holds beer and bowls of chips while you and your buddies watch a game. Your coffee table can serve as a footrest (as long as your mom isn’t visiting to tell you to take your feet off of it). It also serves as a convenient place to put glasses of wine while you and your attractive couch mate use your hands for…other things.
Nice Cookware
Now that Mom’s no longer cooking with you and you aren’t going in with roommates to pay for a pizza, it’s time to learn to cook for yourself. That means you need cookware. A basic set of pots and pans, some good-quality chef’s knives, and a cutting board will do, to start. With an internet full of recipes and YouTube tutorials, there’s no reason you can’t learn to cook. You’ll save money and get the added benefit of impressing your dates. Now get to chopping!
