Kei cars are pretty unique looking vehicles and we’ve written about the Nissan Dayz and the Honda N-Box Slash in the past. You may find the names of the cars are almost as interesting as the vehicles themselves. The vehicle you see here in not a photoshop! This is the Toyota Pixis Mega kei car and it looks like a cute little toy.
The Mega is the latest addition to the Pixis lineup and supplied to Toyota by Daihatsu under an agreement between the two companies. What I like about Kei cars is that they are very efficient at space management and this category of vehicle is a great platform for a company to get creative. An automaker in Japan can do whatever they wish with a Kei car as long as they follow a very clear guideline allowing the company to use a 660cc engine and is no longer than 3.40m, no wider than 1.48m, and maximum of 2 meters tall.
The Toyota Pixis Mega features lateral doors featuring one-touch electric sliding mechanism for rear passengers for easy access to the cabin. The cabin height is 57.3-inches which is class-leading while the total vehicle height is 72.2-inches. Despite its taller than wide design, the Toyota Pixis Mega is said to offer very stable handling thanks to an improved suspension system and body structure.
This Kei car offers substantial storage space compared to the competition with a dedicated storage space beneath the trunk floor which has a capacity of 90 liters of storage space. With this extra storage space, trunk height is now 58.4-inches allowing large objects to be stowed upright without having to fold down seats.
The Toyota Pixis Mega’s 0.66-liter gasoline engine is available in a naturally aspirated developing 51 horsepower while a turbocharged version puts down 63 horsepower. You won’t be getting anywhere in a rush but you will be doing it efficiently. The base two-wheel drive model averages 3.9L/100km or 59.7mpg US. The Toyota Pixi Mega has a starting price tag of $10,930.
