How to Treat an Infected Ear Piercing

At any age health is important and this goes for anything, not just colds and eating healthy.

Getting ear piercings can be really exciting regardless of age or gender, but an unfortunate reality of ear piercings is that it is relatively common to get an infected ear piercing. Even if you go somewhere trustworthy and clean, this is always a possibility whether it’s due to the particular earrings you put in after the fact, how well you cleaned them in the weeks after the piercing as much as it could be the tools used by the place you went. Luckily, there are many ways you can treat an infected ear piercing to ease the pain and make it go away as quickly as possible.

Don’t Touch With Dirty Hands

This is the very first thing you should stop doing! This is a great preventative measure as well, but if your ear piercing has already become infected, you need to be extra careful. Before you touch your ears at all, wash your hands or sanitize them. The last thing you want is bringing more gunk and germs to the infection than you already have.

Clean, Clean, Clean

If you have an infected ear piercing you should be cleaning it regularly to help it go away. There are a couple of ways you can do that, some which are more effective than simply using soap and water, even though that’s a great place to start.

Try using anti-bacterial soaps to begin with. This is usually enough for a mild case, but in cases where the infection is quite serious, using anti-bacterial soap along with cleaning it with rubbing alcohol can make a tremendous difference.

Saline Solution

Salt water or saline solution are also easy home remedies for cleaning your infected ear piercing and helping relieve some of the pain you may feel as a result. While you can wash your ear with saline solution or salt water, this method works best if you can fully submerge the earlobe in the solution.

Neosporin

Neosporin is a topical antibiotic, which can work wonders on an infected ear piercing. Seeing as it’s an over the counter medicine, it’s easy to use and can help heal the infection quicker. This works best when applied after cleaning it with one of the above methods first.

Warm Compresses

Much like you might use for aches and pains, warm compresses help increase blood flow to the affected area, which will quicken the healing process. It’s good to use these for healing purposes, but also to make yourself more comfortable while it’s in the process of healing.

An infected ear piercing can last up two weeks, but if you employ a few of these methods you’ll be able to treat it and move on in no time. However, should none of these methods be working, don’t wait for two weeks to pass, but instead visit a doctor who may be able to give you stronger prescription antibiotics to clear it up.
