Perhaps saying this is heresy, but I’ve never really cared for Disney cartoons.
Sure, I’ve seen all the classics as a kid… Bambie, The Lion King… that one with the woman who pretends to be a man so she can be in the army. To her credit, I remember her being quite resourceful. But none of these characters every really did it for me. All the singing, man… I just couldn’t handle it.
So, if you’ve been following us for a while now, you may be saying to yourself — haven’t you written about Disney quite a few times over the years?
It’s true, we really have. I’ve just gone back and looked, and we’ve actually covered more than even I remember. The difference, is that nothing we’ve posted has been the typical Disney fair. Take for example these Disney Characters All Grown Up, or this gritty collection of unhappy princess endings. Not your standard fare I would say, and neither is this collection by New York-based storyboard and animation artist Jeff Hong.
Check this out…
I promise not to narrate each and every one, but what I will say is that some of these made me laugh pretty hard. Does that make me a bad person?
This is what I’m talking about here. Ariel washing up on an oil covered beach…
Or Dumbo being savagely beaten by a circus handler…
Or, well… yikes… this one is pretty grim. I think you get the idea.
I hope you found these as entertaining as I did, and aren’t judging me too harshly if you didn’t. If you’re interested in seeing more of Jeff’s work, you can head over to his Tumblr page here, or his Reddit thread here. I’ve only included a sampling of his work, and some of the ones I missed are just great.
