I love going on long hikes in the wilderness, although I’ve never gone on a hike that lasted more than a few hours, I know of friends that go for long hikes that last a day or even longer. If you go for one those types of hikes, it’s important to bring food with you and nothing gets your energy up like a hot meal.
Sure you can build a fire out there, which may or may not be permitted, or bring a big heavy stove, or you can give the Vertex Ultralight Backpacking stove a try.
Designed by Austin, Texas based Kevin (no last name, like Madonna?), the Vertex stove is currently being funded on kickstarter.com. The Vertex Ultralight Backpacking stove weighs only 1.8 ounces (50 grams) and folds into a flat pack for easy storage. The stove comes with flexible brushed stainless steel pieces that can be assembled in seconds without the use of tools, to give you a functioning stove.
The Vertex stove uses solid fuel tablets that burn at 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit, these tablets are lightweight and provide plenty of kick. The stove is also designed to be sued with Trangia Spirit Burners, which are readily available at hardware stores.
The Vertex stove comes with a drawstring nylon bag for easy storage and measures 4.84” x 2.87” x 3.0” when assembled. The suggested post size is at least 3.5” diameter. For a pledge of $50 or more, you can reserve yourself one of these lightweight portable stoves.
