Volvo S90 Premium Sedan

Volvo’s new Chinese owners seem to be throwing a lot of money at the car maker in an attempt to make the company relevant and make it a contender in the luxury car market. The Swedish company recently launched the XC90 SUV and now they’ve unveiled their flagship premium sedan, the Volvo S90.

The Volvo S90 sedan will take no established European players like the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The S90 will be offered with a choice of a gasoline engine, a pair of diesel engines, and a plug-in hybrid.

The base Volvo S90 D4 will come with a 2.0 liter turbo diesel engine, producing 190 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, sent to the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission. The D4 reaches 62 mph (100 km/h) in 8.2 seconds with a top speed of 143 mph. The S90 D5 also uses the same engine as the D4, but output has been increased to 235 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to all-four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission, helping it reach 62 mph in 7.3 seconds with a top speed of 143 mph.

The gasoline powered S90 T6 is powered by a twin-charged (turbocharged and supercharged) 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine, producing 320 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to all-four wheels via either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic transmission, with a claimed 0 – 62 mph time of 5.8 seconds for the automatic transmission equipped cars.

The plug-in hybrid is the top of the line model, called the S90 T8; the T8 is equipped with the same engine as the T6 and an additional electric motor, for a combined total output of 407 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. The T8 comes with all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The car is equipped with a centrally mounted 9.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which allows it to travel in electric-only mode for up to 27 miles.

  1. The front side and the interior look really stunning. But the rear design looks too rigid, especially the tail light. It shows the Volvo signature tail light character, but it looks too futuristic for this premium sedan type.
